Maharaja Dalip Singh, last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire, lived at Castle Menzies between 1855 and 1858, following his exile from the Punjab in 1854. He was officially the ward of Sir John Spencer Login and Lady Login, who leased the castle for him.
The surrounding district was known as the 'Appin of Dull', the name 'Appin' deriving from Old Irish apdaine, 'abbey lands', referring to the former monastic estate. Compare Appin in Argyll, the 'abbey lands' in that case being those of the major early Christian monastery of Lismore. Four undecorated crosses, of which three survive, one at Dull itself, and two in the nearby old church at Weem, once stood around the monastic precinct, defining an area of sanctuary.
Coatbridge's local football team are Albion Rovers. Albion Rovers play in the Scottish third division, and Cliftonhill is where they play their home games. The "wee rovers" were founded in 1882 when two local Coatbridge clubs, Rovers and Albion, amalgamated to form the club bearing the current name.[52] The clubs greatest success came in 1920 when they reached the final of the Scottish cup at Hampden Park. Noted Albion Rovers players from the past have included Jock Stein , Bernie Slaven and Tony Green. Local residents generally support Celtic FC. However Rangers F.C. also have a very large local following with a number of supporters clubs in the town.
The main bus terminus is located on a site to the north of the town centre which provides seating, toilets and a cafe.[69] Two railway stations serve the town ? Dunfermline Town to the south of the town centre and Dunfermline Queen Margaret to the east of the town close to Queen Margaret Hospital.[70][71] Nearby stations also exist at Rosyth, Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay to the south of the town.
