Gretna's two blacksmiths' shops and countless inns and smallholding became the backdrops for hundreds of thousands of weddings. Today there are several wedding venues in and around Gretna Green, from former churches to purpose-built chapels. The services at all the venues are always performed over an iconic blacksmith's anvil. Gretna Green endures as one of the world's most popular wedding venues[citation needed], and thousands of couples come from around the world to be married 'over the anvil' at Gretna Green.
These financial problems are now expected to lead to the sale of the ground for a use other than football.[5] Supporters of Gretna FC formed Gretna 2008, a new club that started by playing their home games at the Everholm Stadium in Annan. Dumfries and Galloway Council ruled out bidding for the stadium, which they wanted to preserve for recreational use. It was reported by the BBC that it was likely that Raydale would be sold to developers "outside of football",[6] but the new buyers allowed Gretna 2008 to move into Raydale in May 2009.[7]
In 1473, the Scottish and English Ambassadors met to agree that more frequent meetings of the marcher Wardens were to be held at the six recognised sites on the marches. These were 'Newbyggynfurde, Redaneburn, Gammyllispethe, Belle, Loumabanestane and Kershopebrig and the meetings were to be held at successive venues. On the 26th. March 1494 the commissioners of both countries met at the Lochmaben Stone to finally settle the long running dispute over the 'Fish Garth' across the River Esk.
In the 1920s Penrith Castle came into the possession of the council. It turned the grounds into a fine public park and also built the Castle Hill or Tyne Close Housing Estate nearby. Further pre-war council housing was built at Fair Hill and Castletown and after World War II at Scaws, Townhead and Pategill.
The Village has a rather unsuccessful football team, Moor Row F.C., currently competing in the Egremont & District Sunday League. The most famous player to emerge from the youth ranks of the team was Stewart Flynn who once featured for Trinidad & Tobago's reserves as he was eligible through his fathers origin.
